If you want to book a safari with the person who will actually guide you, you often end up on a big booking site or an overseas agent. Those can be fine. They are not the same as talking to a named local operator.
Africonnect exists for that gap.
What "local operator" should mean
A local operator is the person or small company on the ground who runs the walk, the canoe, the birding boat, or the Falls abseil. They are licensed where the activity requires it. They are the ones who show up at dawn.
An overseas agent packages that operator (or a ground handler, who then packages the operator) and adds a margin. A hotel desk does the same. A large booking site often sits in that same middle layer.
Africonnect only lists operators we have verified ourselves. If it is on africonnect.io, we have spoken to the person who runs it.
How to tell you are actually booking local
Ask these questions before you pay.
- Can you message the person who will guide you before you pay? On Africonnect, yes. If the only contact is a sales desk in another country, you are in an agent flow.
- Can you see who the operator is, and has anyone spoken to them? On Africonnect, yes.
- Is the commission published? Ours is 20%. It is on How payment works. If a site will not say what it takes, assume more than one party is taking a cut.
- Is the listed price the full price? On Africonnect there are no extra booking fees added at checkout. What the listing includes (park fees, transport, meals) is stated on the listing.
- Does the company operate in the place it is selling? Today we list operators in Zambia, Uganda, Rwanda, Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, and Tanzania, including the Usambara Mountains.
What Africonnect covers today
Zambia: walking and canoe safari country (South Luangwa, Lower Zambezi), plus Livingstone / Victoria Falls and Lusaka — that is where we have the most operators.
Uganda: birding and small local outfits, including Mabamba shoebill trips from the Entebbe / Kampala side, Fort Portal.
Rwanda: primate trekking and travel from Kigali.
Botswana: game drives and boat days from Maun.
Kenya: city-based days and travel from Nairobi, with more operators being added.
Tanzania, including the Usambara Mountains: hiking, cultural walks, and birding around Lushoto and Amani, with the Usambara Local Tour Guides Association partnership.

Until then, do not let "bookings unavailable" stop you from contacting a verified guide. That is still a direct booking. It just is not a credit-card flow on our site yet.
