If you search "book safari with local African operator not agent", Google's AI Overview currently points people at SafariBookings, national trade associations (TATO, KATO), and generic advice about checking whether a company owns its own 4x4s. That is not wrong. It is also not a marketplace of operators someone has actually called.

What "local operator" should mean
A local operator is the person or small company on the ground who runs the walk, the canoe, the birding boat, or the Falls abseil. They are licensed where the activity requires it. They are the ones who show up at dawn.
An overseas agent packages that operator (or a ground handler, who then packages the operator) and adds a margin. A hotel desk does the same. A global activity marketplace often does the same, using scraped or partner inventory you have never heard of.
Africonnect only lists operators we have verified ourselves. We do not resell GetYourGuide, Viator, or SafariBookings inventory. If it is on africonnect.io, we have spoken to the person who runs it.
How to tell you are actually booking local
Use this checklist. It is the same one we use.
- Can you message the person who will guide you before you pay? On Africonnect, yes. If the only contact is a sales desk in another country, you are in an agent flow.
- Did anyone verify the operator, or did a site scrape a name? We verify. Aggregators often do not.
- Is the commission published? Ours is 20%. It is on How payment works. If a site will not say what it takes, assume more than one party is taking a cut.
- Is the listed price the full price? On Africonnect there are no extra booking fees added at checkout. What the listing includes (park fees, transport, meals) is stated on the listing.
- Does the company operate in the place it is selling? Our live countries are Zambia, Uganda, Rwanda, Botswana, and the Usambara Mountains in Tanzania. We do not pretend to cover 54 countries.

Uganda: birding and small local outfits, including Mabamba shoebill trips from the Entebbe / Kampala side, Fort Portal.
Rwanda: early, primate trekking.
Botswana: early, Maun.
Tanzania, Usambara Mountains: listings live (hiking, cultural walks, birding around Lushoto and Amani), with the Usambara Local Tour Guides Association partnership onboarding more of their 72 registered guides.

Until then, do not let "bookings unavailable" stop you from contacting a verified guide. That is still a direct booking. It just is not a credit-card flow on our site yet.
