South Luangwa National Park, in eastern Zambia, is the place the walking safari was invented. In the 1950s a game ranger named Norman Carr started taking paying guests into the bush on foot. Seventy-five years later, that is still what the valley is known for: small groups, a licensed professional guide, an armed scout from Zambia's wildlife authority, and a morning spent reading tracks rather than covering kilometres by vehicle.
Independent walking is not allowed. You go with a licensed operator. That is the whole product.
What a walking safari actually is
A typical walk leaves camp at dawn, lasts two to four hours, and covers a few kilometres of riverine forest, mopane, and floodplain. Groups are small. You walk in single file. The guide reads spoor, birdsong, and wind. The armed scout is a last-resort safety measure; good guiding is about not needing it.
This is not a hike for fitness and it is not a game drive without the car. Big-cat sightings happen, but they are not the point. You are in the bush as a human, at the distance animals will tolerate, which is farther than a vehicle can go.
Most first trips combine walking with game drives, including night drives, which South Luangwa also pioneered. Walking-only multi-day trails exist in the more remote sectors. Those are a different product: you walk between bush camps over several days with a daypack.
When to go
June to October is the classic walking season. Vegetation thins, animals concentrate on the Luangwa River, and tracks read clearly in dry sand. October is hot. Many remote walking camps close in the green season (roughly November to March) because access gets difficult and long grass cuts visibility.
If you are travelling in the green season, say so when you enquire. Do not assume every camp is open.
