Kenya: Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)

Kenya introduced the eTA system in 2024, replacing the previous visa-on-arrival system. Most nationalities now get a free Electronic Travel Authorization rather than paying for a visa.

Who Needs an eTA?

Most nationalities including USA, UK, EU countries, Australia, Canada, Japan, and many others. A small number of countries still require a full visa — check the Kenya immigration website for your specific passport.

Tanzania: Visa Required for Most Nationalities

Tanzania Visa on Arrival

Zanzibar Visa

Zanzibar is part of Tanzania. If you have a Tanzania visa, you can enter Zanzibar. There is a separate immigration process when arriving in Zanzibar directly (they stamp your passport separately as a semi-autonomous territory), but you do not need a separate visa.

If flying directly to Zanzibar from abroad (not via Dar es Salaam), you still go through immigration at Abeid Amani Karume Airport and pay the same $50 Tanzania visa fee if your nationality requires a visa.

Uganda: e-Visa Required for Most Nationalities

Uganda requires a visa for most Western nationalities. The online e-visa system is reliable and recommended over visa on arrival.

What It Covers

• Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda — multiple entry across all three
• Valid for 90 days
• Cost: $100 USD (vs $50 × 3 = $150 for individual visas)

What It Doesn't Cover

• Tanzania (not included — requires separate visa)
• Zanzibar (covered by Tanzania visa)

Apply through any of the three countries' immigration portals:

• Kenya: etakenya.go.ke (select "East Africa Tourist Visa")
• Uganda: visas.immigration.go.ug

Apply through whichever country you're entering first.

Who Should Get the East Africa Tourist Visa

It makes sense if you're doing any of these combinations:

• Nairobi → Uganda (gorilla trekking) → Rwanda (gorilla trekking)
• Kenya safari → Uganda chimps → Rwanda volcanoes
• Rwanda → Uganda → Kenya (any order)

It doesn't make sense if: You're only visiting one or two of these countries, or your primary destination is Tanzania.

Yellow Fever: The Certificate That Can Get You Denied Boarding

Yellow fever vaccination requirements in East Africa are taken seriously. Getting this wrong can result in being denied boarding at your departure airport or refused entry at your destination.

What Is a "Yellow Fever Country"?

Countries where yellow fever is present or risk of transmission exists. The WHO maintains the full list. Key ones relevant to East Africa travelers: Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, most of sub-Saharan Africa, parts of Central Africa. If you're transiting through Ethiopia or another African country before reaching Kenya, check whether that country is on the list.

Getting Your Yellow Fever Vaccination

• Must be administered at a certified yellow fever vaccination centre (not just any GP)
• Vaccine takes 10 days to become effective — get it at least 10 days before departure
• Single dose provides lifelong immunity (WHO revised from 10-year booster in 2016)
• You receive an International Certificate of Vaccination (the "yellow card") — keep this with your passport forever
• Cost: $100–200 depending on country and provider

Genuinely important: If Uganda is on your itinerary, get vaccinated regardless. It is required for all travelers and is enforced at Entebbe Airport.

Passport Requirements

Validity

All East African countries require your passport to be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date. Airlines will also check this at check-in. If your passport expires in less than 6 months, renew before booking your trip.

Blank Pages

Have at least 3–4 blank pages for stamps. If crossing multiple land borders (Kenya → Uganda → Rwanda), you'll accumulate stamps quickly.

Land Border Crossings

Many travelers crossing between East African countries do so overland. Key border crossings:

Kenya → Tanzania

• Isebania/Sirari: Western Kenya to Mwanza (Tanzania). Less commonly used. Open daylight hours.

Uganda → Kenya

Land Border Tips

• Bring USD cash — card machines at land borders are unreliable
• Have all documents organized (passport, visa, yellow fever certificate, return ticket copy)
• Allocate 2–3 hours for most border crossings (stamp out, walk across, stamp in)
• Keep your bag with you — don't hand it to strangers offering to "help carry"

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake #1: Applying for Visa Too Late

Tanzania and Uganda e-visas take 3–5 business days. Apply at least 2 weeks before travel to have time to resolve any issues. Apply a month ahead in peak season.

Mistake #2: Forgetting Yellow Fever Certificate

You will not be allowed to board your flight to Uganda without proof of yellow fever vaccination. This is enforced at departure airports, not just on arrival. Keep your yellow fever certificate with your passport at all times.

Mistake #3: Passport Validity

Your passport must be valid for 6 months beyond your intended return date. Check this before booking anything else.

Mistake #4: Not Having USD Cash

Visa on arrival and land border visas require USD cash. Small bills ($1, $5, $10, $20) are easier to work with than $100 bills, which some border officials are reluctant to accept. Bring $200–300 USD cash as a buffer.

Mistake #5: Underestimating Border Crossing Time

Land border crossings can take 30 minutes or 4 hours depending on the day. Never book a same-day connection after a land crossing.

Mistake #6: Assuming Your eTA/Visa Covers All Countries

Your Kenya eTA covers Kenya only. Your Uganda visa covers Uganda only. You need separate documentation for each country unless you have the East Africa Tourist Visa.
